A Lesson Learned: The Tour Championship and keeping the faith

(ATLANTA, GA) -- Though the FedExCup was settled before the first shot was hit this week in Atlanta, there was no shortage of great golf, great thrills and dramatic moments this week at The Tour Championship presented by Coca Cola. The top 30 in the FedExCup standings came to the newly renovated East Lake Golf Club and put on quite a show -- particularly the four-man battle that shaped up on Sunday where at one point, it looked like each of the four might win.

A Lesson Learned: Excelling at Match Play at The Ryder Cup

As I watched the action from The Ryder Cup this past weekend, I -- like everyone else -- was riveted by the drama and the great golf. There were so many great shots, so many moments that I kept thinking would be the most memorable and it somehow just kept getting better and better.

A Lesson Learned: Villegas wins because he believes he can

Playoffs: Just the word itself conjures up memories of people performing extraordinary tasks under the brightest spotlight they were ever under: Journeyman pitcher Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, Timmy Smith's 202 yards rushing in Super Bowl XXI, The 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team, you winning the club Championship. What does it take to make something like this possible?

A Lesson Learned: Keeping Focus at The Deutsche Bank Championship

This week's lesson learned is all about focus. How many times, whether you're a world class player or a weekend warrior, is the tournament, or your round decided by something in the last few holes? Maybe "decided" isn't the proper term, more like "defined?" Anyone who has been watching PGA tour golf lately knows that this has been the case, especially with Sergio Garcia.

A Lesson Learned: Solid Iron Play wins The Barclays

It's playoff time. After 37 events during the regular season, an approximate 250 contestants have been narrowed down to the top 144 players. Now, within four events, that field will be reduced each week until an overall FedExCup champion is crowned in Atlanta at THE TOUR Championship.

Carl Pettersson won the Wyndham Championship by 2 shots over Scot McCarron finishing at -21 for the event. Both players interestingly enough were using long putters.

A Lesson Learned: Playing The Monster at The PGA Championship

My first impressions of the 90th PGA Championship were not overwhelmingly positive. The conditions were really trying and the course was just brutal. I genuinely felt for the players who were having to test their skills on a course that wasn't rewarding skilled shots.

A Lesson Learned: The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

Each year the best players in the world come to Firestone and each year the course provides one of the most challenging, but fair tests of golf found anywhere. One of the keys to Firestone is controlling your distance into greens. Many of these greens slope back to front quite a bit or have Sunday pin positions with a good deal of slope behind them. Keeping the ball below the hole so that you have an uphill putt that you can be aggressive with is essential. Time and time again when players hit past a pin or even pin high they are left with a defensive putt. Lee Westwood hit it close on #17 pin-high. But putting across the slope he had a very difficult putt and didn't convert. Earlier on #10 Phil Michelson hit it close, but he sent his downhiller three feet past the hole.

A Lesson Learned: Chez Reavie gets a good flow

Chez Reavie looked calm and confident coming down the stretch in RBC Canadian Open. His swing stayed rhythmical and his pre-shot routine never wavered - not an easy feat when vying for your first PGA Tour win. A common remark I hear from many amateurs when talking about the best players in the world is how easy they make it look. Their swings look smooth, putting stokes confident, and there is even a rhythmic pace to their walk. I like to say that their rounds of golf "flow" very well. Chez's sure did on Sunday.

A Lesson Learned: Harrington prevails at the Open Championship

What a tremendous 137th Open Championship. The drama, the story lines and what about the weather? Congratulations to Padraig Harrington in becoming the first European to repeat as Open Champion since James Braid did in 1906. This is an incredible accomplishment considering the players who have come and gone over those years. No wonder why it is such a compelling major championship.
