Wrist injury sidelines Donald indefinitely, with surgery a possibility

- AP

LONDON (AP) -- Luke Donald of England will miss the Open Championship next week because of a wrist injury that will keep him out of competition for three to four weeks, jeopardizing his hopes of qualifying for the European Ryder Cup team.

Also Friday, Jerry Kelly found out Friday that he is going to the Open Championship, ending any dilemma of whether to play in his hometown tournament or golf's oldest championship.

Donald said in a statement Friday that he felt a pop in his wrist on the 15th tee of the final round at the U.S. Open, and he has been meeting with doctors over the last three weeks to figure out the best way to treat it. Surgery is among the options.

"I consider The Open Championship to be at the top of the list of the four biggest tournaments I play each year, so it is extremely disappointing to not be able to be at Royal Birkdale," Donald said.

The Open Championship starts next Thursday. Donald would be replaced by Pat Perez, who was the first alternate.

Donald, a former NCAA champion at Northwestern, is No. 9 in the European Ryder Cup standings based on world ranking points earned since September. His injury means European Captain Nick Faldo might have to use one of his two picks on Donald, if he is healthy enough to play at Valhalla in September.

Kelly was the second alternate for Birkdale at the start of the week, but was planning not to go because next week is also the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, a tournament Kelly considers his "fifth major" because he grew up in Wisconsin.

But after Donald withdrew because of his wrist injury, Kelly learned later in the day that David Toms had withdrawn, giving him a spot.

"I'm excited to play," Kelly said. "I was not going to pass up this chance. If I would have been first alternate, I would not have gone over. I was not going to take the chance of missing both tournaments."
