
PLYMOUTH, Ind. -- Point Loma Nazarene's Sam Cyr has been named the recipient of the Jack Nicklaus Award. The award is presented annually to the national players of the year in NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA.
Cyr won three tournaments this season, including the NAIA National Championship. He also carded six top-five finishes in addition to his three wins.
"I'm very happy and honored to win this award," said Cyr.
ARNOLD PALMER AWARD: Sam Cyr of Point Loma Nazarene has claimed the Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway Golf for the NAIA. The Palmer Award is presented annually to the national championship individual medalists.
A junior, Cyr earned his third victory of the year at the NAIA National Championship. He had posted six other top-5 finishes. Cyr was also named a First-Team All-American.
PHIL MICKELSON AWARD: Michael Loppnow of Wayland Baptist was awarded the Phil Mickelson Award presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the nation's outstanding freshman NAIA men's golf. Justin Lower of Malone, Oklahoma Christian's Axel Ochoa, Kevin Palmer of Davenport and Texas Wesleyan's Armando Villarreal round out the All-Freshman Team.
Loppnow finished in the in the top five on three occasions including two wins for a Wayland Baptist team that finished fifth in the NAIA National Championship.
NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR: Chris MacDonald of British Columbia was named the Eaton Golf Pride NAIA National Coach of the Year after his Thunderbirds wrapped up their first-ever NAIA National Championship.
MacDonald led British Columbia to three wins in addition to the National Championship. MacDonald's squad never finished out of the top five in any tournament this season. Two Thunderbirds were also named First-Team All-Americans.
NAIA PING FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICANS: A total of 10 players comprised the first team: Oklahoma Christian's Bruno Buccolo, Sam Cyr of Point Loma Nazarene, Berry's Samuel del Val and Jarod Trammell, Mitchell Evanecz of Victoria, Oklahoma City's Anthony Michael, Cory Renfrew and Blake Rowe-Sleeman of British Columbia, Johnson & Wales' Dave Tobon and Hamilton Wheeler of Southern Nazarene.
NAIA PING ALL-REGION TEAMS: NAIA PING All-Region teams have been announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. PING All-Region teams are selected based on outstanding season play. The four All-Region teams consist of a 15 players. Members of the PING All-Region teams are eligible for PING All-America honors.
